Celebrity Choices: Lisa Holloway
Another of Nottinghamshire’s own tells us where she likes to go. Presenter of Channel 5’s Best B&Ber, Lisa Holloway says “I’ve made a discovery… In Radcliffe on Trent of all places, and I’m not the first either, judging by how busy Venezia in Saxondale is on a midweek evening. Since the demise of the much missed Café Bleu in Newark, we have struggled to find somewhere to eat which is a treat without breaking the bank. I wanted to take my Godson out somewhere special for a birthday meal, and Venezia came highly recommended.
We felt relaxed and looked after from the word go. There were families with small children, a big party having a raucous time and couples having a romantic evening, busy and buzzy but with a calm and organised service which we appreciated.
After delicious Prosecco and olives at the bar, we sat at a roomy round table and tried both the white and red house wine, both exceptionally good. My fish soup was luxurious and generously full of clams, prawns and mussels, and the main course of king scallops in a white wine sauce with Parmesan was so moreish I had to ask for a spoon. Vegetables were well cooked and the roast potatoes with fresh Rosemary were perfect.
Edward had a magnificent meaty calzone and my sister had pasta Arrabiata which is her go to dish to test new Italian restaurants. This one passed with flying colours. Service was attentive and we had a long, unhurried meal with lots of forks diving into each others plates for a taste.
We were all too full for pud, but the coffee was good with a tiny, crisp sweet button of a biscuit. Terrific value for money, smart and sassy, Venezia is a find. We’ve already made plans to return.
